How do you do a Thermal Scan?
Thermal imaging is done through the use of an infrared sensor. Infrared sensors measure temperature through the use of capturing and measuring infrared light. A thermal scan is used throughout the home to measure temperature differentials and highlight areas of excess heat.
What do you look for?
We can check for insufficient insulation in the attic.
We can detect water leaks behind walls and in ceilings.
We can find problems with electrical panels, such as hot spots in circuit breakers.
We can check for air leaks in doors and windows.
We can identify air leaks in AC ducts in the attic.
Can I fix it?
Hot spots found on the thermal imager are often from areas of insufficient or missing insulation. Insufficient insulation can lead to energy inefficiencies in the home that can cause higher electricity bills as well as nuisances in heating and cooling your home. The typical remedy to a hot spot found with the thermal imager is either a redistribution of insulation in the attic, replacement of old insulation, or installation of new insulation in the area. A thermal scan is also useful in determining whether doors and windows have been properly sealed to insure the home owner is not losing efficiency in these areas.
